Understanding the difference between shipping by general commodity freight, Moveamerica sealed divider, and a household goods carrier can be very confusing. Freight rates are MUCH MUCH cheaper than a moving van but shipping by freight requires that all contents be packed in corrugated or wooden containers, or placed on wooden pallets and shrink wrapped or banded to the pallet. Also, all items must be weighed and the correct NMFC classification provided. For instance, household goods or personal effects would be class 100.
General freight contents can sometimes be moved on and off the trailer at different stops along the way, or while the trailer is being loaded or unloaded. Sealed divider shipments, on the contrary, stay in the front of the trailer behind a bulkhead (a wall) until delivered. Rates for general freight are less expensive, but care should be taken to understand any additional costs such as pickup or delivery to residences, inside pickup and delivery, notification of arrival, and liftgate requirements are usually extras. Make sure these are included in your quote. If you are planning a household goods move and want to take advantage of the lower freight rates, make sure everything you send is adequately boxed, in a carton, crated, or shrink wrapped on a pallet. As a general rule, furniture is not a good candidate for a general freight shipment unless it is padded and shrink wrapped on a pallet.
