Trailer Space and Portable Containers Are Different Moving Systems
MoveAmerica™ uses space inside an enclosed commercial freight trailer. Your shipment occupies the amount of trailer length required and is separated from freight behind it by a security divider bulkhead.
PODS® delivers a portable container to the residence. You load the container, PODS picks it up, and for long-distance moves PODS says it takes the loaded container to a storage center and transfers the container to long-haul transportation.

1. Continuous Trailer Space vs. Fixed Container Sizes
PODS currently offers 8-, 12-, and 16-foot portable containers. Its own published size guidance says larger households may require more than one container, and its 12-foot container is offered for local moves rather than long-distance moves.
MoveAmerica approaches capacity differently. MoveAmerica uses one or multiple 28' x 8' x 9' commercial trailers as needed, and transportation pricing starts with a 3-foot minimum. Instead of choosing another fixed container size, the shipment can use additional linear feet inside the available trailer. That can be particularly useful for both smaller shipments and larger household moves that do not fit neatly into one portable-container size.
2. Your Shipment Travels Inside an Enclosed Commercial Trailer
With MoveAmerica™, household goods are loaded inside an enclosed commercial freight trailer. The trailer walls, roof, and doors form the exterior transportation enclosure around the shipment. A security divider bulkhead separates the household goods from freight carried behind the divider.
PODS uses the portable container itself as the enclosure around the customer's belongings. PODS currently describes its containers as weather-resistant and specifically states that they are not completely waterproof.
Both systems are designed for moving household goods, but the equipment design is different. Customers should consider which arrangement they prefer for a long-distance move.
3. Monthly Container Rental vs. Transportation-Focused Service
One of the genuine advantages of a portable container is time. PODS rents its containers by the month, allowing customers to keep the container at the residence while loading or unloading according to the rental schedule.
PODS' current billing information says the first month's container rent is charged after the initial container delivery, and recurring monthly rent is charged on the container's billing-cycle date. PODS also states that monthly charges are not prorated.
MoveAmerica provides three business days to load and three business days to unload, plus any weekends or holidays that fall within those periods. MoveAmerica is primarily a transportation service rather than a month-to-month container-rental service.
4. Flex Moving Means You Decide Who Loads
MoveAmerica does not require every customer to use the same loading arrangement. You may self-load, use your own helpers, or ask MoveAmerica to arrange professional loading and unloading labor:
- Load and unload yourself
- Use family or friends
- Have MoveAmerica arrange professional loading assistance upon request
- Have MoveAmerica arrange professional unloading assistance upon request
- Use different arrangements at origin and destination
PODS is also primarily a self-load moving system, and PODS says it can connect customers with local packing and loading companies when help is wanted.
The difference MoveAmerica emphasizes is that loading labor and long-distance transportation can be selected separately. That is the idea behind the MoveAmerica Flex Moving System.
5. Larger Households Should Compare Total Capacity, Not Just One Unit
PODS describes its 16-foot unit as its largest container and a common choice for a three- to four-bedroom home. PODS also notes that larger households may require multiple containers.
MoveAmerica uses a continuous section of trailer space rather than splitting the shipment according to fixed portable-container dimensions. The amount of space needed will still vary with the household and how efficiently it is loaded.

6. Commodity Flexibility and Automobile Transport
MoveAmerica emphasizes household-goods moving, but the shipment does not have to be limited to ordinary furniture, cartons and personal effects. MoveAmerica will transport other lawful commodities when carrier, safety, loading and weight requirements are satisfied.
A household shipment may include a garage workshop, tools, machinery or similar property. MoveAmerica can also transport an automobile in available trailer space when the vehicle can be safely loaded and secured and the combined shipment remains within applicable space, axle, carrier and weight limits.
MoveAmerica's maximum total shipment weight for an entire 28-foot trailer is 26,000 pounds. Heavy items must also be distributed and secured so applicable axle, floor-loading and carrier requirements are not exceeded.
PODS has a materially different automobile rule: its current FAQ states that cars and motorized vehicles cannot be placed in a PODS container. PODS also publishes restrictions on hazardous materials and other prohibited or discouraged contents.
7. Military PPM Moves Require Special Documentation
Personally Procured Moves require documentation beyond an ordinary civilian household move. Military customers should obtain authorization and confirm their branch and Transportation Office requirements before booking either service.

MoveAmerica may arrange qualifying PPM transportation when the route and assigned carrier can meet the shipment requirements.
Empty/light and loaded/heavy weight-ticket capability must be confirmed for the specific shipment before booking. MoveAmerica does not determine military reimbursement and is not a government-assigned carrier.
PODS Military PPM
PODS actively markets PPM/DITY moving service. Its current pricing FAQ tells active-duty customers who require empty and full weight tickets to add that requirement to the quote or tell the agent the shipment is a DITY move.
When Might PODS Be the Better Choice?
A useful comparison should acknowledge where the competing system has an advantage. PODS may be particularly attractive when you want:
- A portable container sitting at your residence for an extended period
- Month-to-month loading, unloading, or storage flexibility
- Ground-level container loading rather than loading into trailer-height equipment
- One container that can remain loaded while your housing schedule changes
PODS also requires adequate placement space. Its published delivery guidance currently calls for a flat, unobstructed maneuvering area approximately 12 feet wide, 15 feet high, and 40 feet long for its PODZILLA® delivery system, and some locations may require permits or approvals.
